Her husband, 25-year-old Jonathan Renteria, was arrested and charged with murder by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.

According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, police received calls of an attempted suicide on Sept. 11. Renteria was sent to hospital to be treated for his injuries.

During the investigation, cops discovered a handwritten note from Renteria that said he allegedly killed his wife.

Police in L.A. conducted a welfare check at their apartment and found her body.

“I didn’t do enough,” friend and neighbour Arielle Miller told ABC News. “I didn’t fight hard enough for her to get the help that she needed.”

According to Miller, the couple met online and moved into the apartment complex 18 months ago.

Bunyan’s friends say she was a lawyer who sought to defend the most vulnerable in court.

“June was loved by so many people, and she didn’t deserve the way that she was disrespected, and she deserves dignity in death,” Miller said.

Bunyan’s mother and brother have set up a GoFundMe page to help bring her remains back to Scotland. It is being organized by Vicky Tulika, Bunyan’s best friend.

“With unimaginable heartbreak, we share the devastating news that our beloved daughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend, June Bunyan, was tragically taken from us due to a violent crime in the United States,” Jill and Lyle Bunyan wrote in the appeal.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the fundraiser has collected nearly $31,800 for funeral and burial expenses, as well as for any legal or travel costs.

“June’s life was cut short so far from home, and we are now faced with the heartbreaking task of bringing her back to the U.K. She can then be laid to rest with the dignity and love she deserves, surrounded by family and friends.”
