The Yankees will turn to sophomore starter Luis Gil in Saturday’s Game 1 of the best of five ALDS, a clear advantage for the Blue Jays knowing they will have veteran Kevin Gausman on the hill.

Given the fact the Yankees exhausted their three pitchers best by winning the wild card 2-1 against the Boston Red Sox, the choice for Saturday’s starter came down to either Gil or fellow righty Will Warren.

Warren started against the Jays in Toronto back in July when he gave up 10 hits, including two homers, and eight runs, while issuing four walks.
He has pitched at least five innings in Warren’s past six starts.
Gil earned the win last month when the Yankees played host to the Blue Jays.
He went six innings and yielded one run on three hits, while walking four and recording one strikeout.
“I just feel like (Gil is) ready for this,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said in naming his starter for Game 1.
“He’s in line for it. We decided for now we want to keep (Will) Warren an option in the pen and we feel like Luis is ready to go.”

Gil is known to issue free passes.
In 2024, he was named AL rookie of the year after posting a 15-7 record with an ERA of 3.50 in 27 starts.
This season, Gil did not make his debut until early August as he recovered from a right lat strain.
In 11 starts, the Yankees went 8-3.
Boone also announced that Max Fried, who pitched Game 1 in the wild card, will get the start Sunday.
Fried has been the staff ace in the wake of Gerrit Cole missing the entire season following an off-season elbow surgery.
When the series shifts to the Bronx for Games 3 and 4, Boone indicated Carlos Rodon and Cam
Schlittler will get the nod to start.
Boone added the rotation will “line it up as you would think” when he announced the decision to start Gil and Fried in Toronto, a clear sign No. 2 starter Rodon will face the Jays in Game 3 followed by the rookie Schlittler.
