No cause of death was revealed.
Annett, a native of Iowa, moved to North Carolina and began racing professionally in the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) Series.
He earned his first win at the Talladega Superspeedway in October 2007 and followed that victory with another first-place finish at the Daytona ARCA 200 at Daytona International Speedway in February 2008.
Annett also competed in all three NASCAR levels and was a Cup driver from 2014 through 2016, starting 106 races.
He retired at the end of the 2021 season after reinjuring his right leg, which forced him to miss the last three races.
“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of former Xfinity Series driver Michael Annett at the age of 39,” Xfinity Racing wrote on the X platform.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Annett family in this difficult time.”
