While the Greater Toronto Area has seemingly been spared by a big storm, much of southern Ontario will be hit with much more as snowfall warnings remain in place this weekend.

Wind gusts up to 70 km/h

According to Environment Canada, two to four centimetres of snow and up to 70 km/h wind gusts are expected to hit Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton, while Markham and areas of Durham Region could see two to five centimetres of snow, with up to five centimetres or more on higher ground north of Lake Ontario, per CP24.

Markham and Durham Region are under the yellow-coded snowfall warning as part of its new colour alert system.

The most common, yellow alerts are issued when “moderate, localized, and/or short-term” hazardous weather may cause damage, disruption or an impact on health, reported the  National Post.

Warnings issued

Warnings have also been issued by Environment Canada for a stretch of the province from Sault Ste. Marie, east to Chalk River, and south to Walpole Island on Lake St. Clair. That area is predicted to see five to 20 centimetres of snow.

The weather agency states that travel will be challenging in areas with snowfall warnings, as visibility can be reduced at times.

Multiple rounds of snow last week has already dumped close to 60 centimetres off Lake Huron, with areas west of Kitchener experiencing close to 30 centimetres of the white stuff.

Snow is expected to change to flurries in most areas later Sunday.
